you could watch for that upgrade and hold the kernel package, but
there are so many changes, that I doubt you'll be able to run it.

you might think about trying a backported kernel in advance of the
move to etch -- see if it solves your problems and if not, you can get
setup to roll your 2.4 kernels going forward. But others know way more
about this than I do.
