A lot of people have a small number of files in their directories, and a
ridiculously overpowered computer for their needs.

Actually, I'd *really* like to have the choice of "crippling" (read:
uncrippling) the gnome non-scalable, defective file-picker design in my
system to never open anything to mime-magic it.  stat() is bad enough.
Maybe there is a knob somewhere to do it in gconf...
