I managed to solve the problem. There may be a better/faster way, but
this is what I did:

download from security.debian.org
	mysql-client-4.1_4.1.11a-4sarge7_i386.deb
	mysql-common-4.1_4.1.11a-4sarge7_all.deb
	mysql-server-4.1_4.1.11a-4sarge7_i386.deb

dpkg -i --force all mysql-common-4.1_4.1.11a-4sarge7_all.deb
dpkg -i --force all mysql-client-4.1_4.1.11a-4sarge7_i386.deb
dpkg -i --force all mysql-server-4.1_4.1.11a-4sarge7_i386.deb

Then I ran 'alter table xxx type=MyISAM' on the offending tables. Then:

apt-get -f install

(which dl'd the above from snapshot)

And finally:

apt-get install mysql-server

which gives me a 5.0 install.

Whew!
