There also exists the 'equivs' package to have your non-.deb package 'register' in the Debian package database. Some folks like processor-specific packages becuase of a percieved speed difference. Debian has a few of these in what might be core places: kernel packages and in the un-offical mplayer packages. Also, if you create debian source package from your sources, you can create your own debian packages that can then be used on any other system. cheers, Kev Ps.
