ls -l /dev/dsp /dev/audio to check that both of those devices belong to the
'audio' group.


The problem appears to be resolved now. Deleting one user appeared to
have removed all other users from the audio group for some reason.
Adding the users back in didn't make the sound work again immediately,
but then I happened to reboot and the sound had come back again. Just
one of those things I guess...
