Uhhh, no.  Either you delete all but the last n messages, or you delete
messages older than n days.  That's not "according to a set of rules".
That's remarkably inflexible.

IMHO, unread messages should never be deleted.  For a mailing list, your
opinion may differ.  That's fine, I don't claim to have the only way to
manage mail, or even the best way.  But you don't even have the option.

My normal rule of thumb for Debian mailing lists, for example, is to delete
all mail older than eight weeks, unless it's unread or flagged as
important.  Even mutt can do that. :)

Oh, yes, it's MUCH more nice to the low bandwidth people to make them
*wait* to see the headers, vs downloading them in the background while they
interact with the application in the foreground.  Gee, that makes sense.
Not.

Oh, and an extension?  Wow, there's another one of those pesky add-on
programs.  No doubt extensions don't count, or something.
