Yes. since the upgrade will probably replace X completely, it would be
unwise to trust it to keep running through the upgrade.

What I said (or should have said) was "keep an *operational* copy of the
currently-operational system". I actually used extra partitions to
store the copy and checked that I could boot it. And it was well worth
it. I ended up booting it and using it to make *another* copy after
my first upgrade attempt ran aground. Except for the two times I
rebooted to a different partition, my users didn't notice anything
special going on during the upgrade! Mind you, they were primarily
using it as a gateway for access to the wider internet, but I can't
imagine this working with a lot of onther systems I've used.
