For what it's worth, you still get "proper" serial modems in PCMCIA
disguise.  My Duxbury PCMCIA shows up as a stock standard serial port
- /dev/ttyS0

I think CNet (or Trendnet or something like that) still makes proper
hardware modems for PCMCIA.
