Cannot open master side of pty

After 'apt-get update' and 'apt-get upgrade' I got the following message 
when starting mc:

Cannot open master side of pty: No such file or directory (2)

I removed mc and reinstalled it but this messages remains.

I run Woody. Maybe the fact that Sarge is now 'stable' causes this problem?
