xrdb: Can't open display ':0'

Hi John. That error can mean a number of things:

X is not running because it lacked a valid mode line (most common)
X is not running because it died for some other reason
X is refusing connections (less common)

Try starting "X" on its own and see what happens.

If you get a grey screen and a mouse pointer than it worked ok - control-alt-backspace to kill the X server you started.

If X fails to start it will leave an error message (which will turn up in .xsession-errors too).

If you need to use X in a hurry and kdm is broken, startx will get you out of trouble. If this works but kdm doesn't then the problem relates to kdm.

Rob,

If I logon and start x it goes into the GNOME desktop and that seems to work. I cannot select any desktop from any (gdm, xdm, or kdm) chooser without failure. I seem to get the same errors in .xsession-errors and the chooser reverts to signon.
