Was Space Recovery - Now X-windows problem

I was noticed that my hard drive was out of room. After some searching using ls & df, I found a file in my home directory (.xsession-errors) that had grown to 17G. I removed it, and thought I was out of the woods. Now I am unable to start any desktop manager. It would just return to the chooser screen

As kdm was my choice, I first attempted to install kdm on top of the existing install. apt-get reported that I had the most current version, so I un-installed it, did both a clean and autoclean and then re-installed kdm and chose that as my default manager.

When I attempt to log on, kdm thinks andagain returns to the chooser screen. When I examine the file .xsession-errors, I see the following:

Xsession: X session started for xxxxx at Thu Jul 28 17:16:53 EDT 2005
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Protocol not supported by server

xrdb: Can't open display ':0'

Any suggestions on where to look to decipher the error messages?
