CD/DVD drive not in /dev/

Hi all,

I'm just getting to grips with Linux, and have managed to find out
answers to most of my questions, but this one has me foxed.

However, I have just started to get Ogle working, when I discovered
that my DVD/CD drive is not showing up in /dev/. hdb is there (which
is my hard disk).

Note that this is not a SCSI or SATA system - plain vanilla EIDE.

I know the drive works: I installed the base packages with it! I can
continue to boot up with it! Can I get anything to see it however?

$ ls /dev/hd*
/dev/hdb /dev/hdb1 /dev/hdb2 /dev/hdb3

This is a snipped version of the dmesg output. I can't see anything obvious.
