I am using 3x3 virtual (not multiple) desktops, but this problem also
exists on my laptop, which only uses one virtual desktop.

Probably ;) - the problem is with menus that contain, say, 250 entries,
a list of which will not fit even on my 1600x1200 screen without some
sort of wrapping.
