Thanks for providing me with some very valuable ideas.

I ended up doing the following:

1. Compiled kernel to 2.6.11.12 with CIFS support
2. Mounted my win 2003 shares
3. Used rsnapshot to back up shares to apache web directory - easy for file
restore.

This seems to be a good solution that will apparently work well.
