Sounds like you attempted to install the closed-source "nvidia"
driver. Nothing wrong with that, but as you've discovered, it's not
as easy as using the open-source "nv" driver. My advice: try using
the open-source driver.
Run:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
When it asks you what driver you should use, select "nv". When
dpkg-reconfigure finishes, run:
sudo dexconf
This will update /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 according to your choices.
It's fine that lspci outputs "Unknown device 0181". Important thing
is that it recognizes it as an nVidia video card.
