The fact that lspci does not recognize the type of video card is, I think, not closely related to your problem. I got exactly the same message on my
laptop with X running correctly (untill I upgrade it in fact but that's another problem).
Perhaps you should first check if your chip correctly identified by X at startup (look at /var/log/XFree86.0.log). If it is, perhaps you should have a
look to the readme file of the nvidia driver. It contains lots of information about specific configuration and hardware issues.
