RE: STARTTLS: read error=generic SSL error (0)
It seems to occur on high loads and 1000+ list type mail shots.
It is not a common symptom, my 2 x Debian Servers do not seem to suffer
from it.
If you do see it, try putting this into /etc/mail/access
Try_TLS: NO
Srv_Features: S
This seems to have fixed/bypassed it (on advice from sendmail.org)

FWIW I don't see this problem and I use STARTTLS with SMTP and IMAP
(and Jabber) all the time. You need to research (google) that error
message and maybe turn on more logging in sendmail so you can identify
the -cause- of that problem. Only then can you resolve it.
