First off, what a horrible isp, I am sorry they do this to you, that
sucks.
If that is the case and this is too late now but for next time if
there is one, dont download a full desktop at all.
When the installer has the base system ready to go, it asks then to
select a group of packages, server, desktop, dev tools etc etc...
Unselect all of them, choose nothing and press enter. Apt will then
go out and upgrade the packages you have installed, if you did a net
install they will already be the latest, if you installed from a cdrom
some might need upgrading.
Once this is done, you will of course have no X and no desktop but you
can then install what you need as you need it. For example Xfce4 will
be a much smaller download than the full "desktop" option you chose
earlier.(I believe, but am not sure, choosing "Desktop" will get you
gnome and kde, which would account for the size of you download)
Pick the window manager or desktop environment you want, then install
x-window-system and gnome or kde or xfce or fluxbox etc etc.
You still will pull down quite a lot of packages, but they will be
only ones you want and need, if you dont use kde you need it on your
system and its just something extra to worry about when upgrading.
When you need an editor, get one, when you need an irc client, go get
one. This way you save some of your precious connection time for more
useful activities.
One more thing is to find the fastest mirror, make a back up of
/etc/apt/sources.list and then install apt-spy or netselect-apt
and see if theres a faster mirror near you.
