gdm worked fine on this computer previously. It presumably broke during
an upgrade, though there were several between now and the last time the
system rebooted, so I am not sure which one. Anyway, I'm just about to
try some older versions to see if I can find one which works.
I tried the second newest version and it has the same problem. Dunno
where to get any others short of the stable version which requires a
bunch of libraries that I don't have.

Have you tried a purge and reinstall, or just a reinstall? If just the
reinstall, purge it first.
