gdm fails to start

I have a system on which gdm refuses to start. The X server starts each time, seemingly successfully, then quits before gdm displays. This happens 6 times before gdm gives up for a few minutes, though it does not seem to realize that X doesn't start successfully as it doesn't pop up the failure notice which I have seen when X is misconfigured. The problem exists only for gdm, as 'startx' is able to get GNOME started without problems. I have tried purging gdm, as well as all of X and related libraries, even deleting all of /etc/X11. It still suffers the same problem after reinstallation of these packages. The machine is running Sarge which a few unstable packages. I also have an unstable machine which runs the same version of gdm just fine.

Does anybody know what could cause this? I have tried everything I could think of short of a full reinstallation, which I am not keen on doing as it should not be necessary.
