I think plenty of people would love a simple laptop that just works --
I agree a real lightweight wm with a simple editer like Nedit, a
lightweight browser and email client, what more could you really need?
Knoppix is a great idea to get it running, but how big is the hd? I
think knoppix likes nearly 3 gig just to install. of course you can
dselect a bunch of crap after words...
good luck and enjoy a not so complicated computing experience...

I've just inherited a 70 mHz 486 laptop with 24m RAM (!). It
currently runs Windows 95. question: what can one do withsuch a
machine? Any ideas out there? Anything would be great, but something
educational would be great -- my 6-year-old would love a computer.
I've once tried knoppix on my old P1/166MHz / 16MB RAM laptop.
Of course GNOME or KDE won't work due low RAM, but as far as I can
remember IceWM worked quite well. There are other
"low-RAM-window-managers" in Knoppix. Have a look in the
boot-menu-help.
Best regards,
Hannes.
