I just checked and kdm indeed has a "menu" pulldown menu that offers a console 
login.  Also, one can just enter alt-n when kdm comes up and they will be 
taken to a console.  I recall that gdm has something similar.  I have not 
used xdm in a long time so I don't recall what it looks like.
