/dev/psaux disappeared with recent sarge upgrade, kernel 2.4.26

I'm having trouble with remote troubleshooting a PS/2 mouse problem.
Running Sarge, kernel 2.4.26-1-k6.

od -tx1 /dev/psaux gives "No such device," but the node (c 10 1) is
present in /dev.

Something in a recent upgrade (but not kernel upgrade) made /dev/psaux
stop working. PSMOUSE is compiled into the (default Debian) kernel, and
dmesg reports "mice: PS/2 mouse device common for all mice."

I've tried deleting the node and recreating it, but no matter what I do
/dev/psaux gives "No such device," and thus the X server can't start.

I don't have direct physical access to this box, but people tell me the
mouse is still there and plugged into the PS/2 port. Several reboots and
unplugging/replugging the mouse do not fix the problem.

This is *not* the very common problem people have with the 2.4.x ---> 2.6
transition where you need to switch to /dev/input/mice--the system is
still on the same kernel where the PS/2 mouse was working until a recent
upgrade.

I tried uninstalled udev but that made no difference. Also, I'm not using
devfsd.

Any suggestions?
