NV XFree86 ACPI Lockups and Compaq BIOS frustrations.
I converted over to Debian from the Slackware camp when potato first
came out. I wanted an 'easier' distro (being a sysadmin at work, I
didn't want to come home and compile applications too), I've been
nothing but happy. Because of the quality of Deb I've never had an
issue I was unable to figure out, packages are always available for
everything I want to play with they 'just work' and are setup right
(unlike my experience with Redhat and the rest of those RPM based
distros). Kudos to the package maintainers.
Now I do have a problem I just can't get a figured out, so I'm looking
for some help!
I have a Compaq SP700 "professional workstation" at home. Its been a
great workstation throughout the years, never mind its quirks (to get it
to reboot you have to remove 90% of the hardware modules and use the
kernel option 'reboot=soft,warm').
I've never really had a hardware "problem" with it, power management is
broke... but I've always been able to get into X (it has probably had a
.5 dozen video cards over the years), use the fire wire... all the on
board devices work (even though I've never used the onboard sound).
Now just recently I replaced the aging voodoo 3500 in it, in preparation
for playing with MythTV... I put a NV FX5200 into the old lady and
ordered myself a PVR 350... I hadn't played with Sarge's RC2 installer
so I thought I would reinstall and test my automated install stuff and
see how things are coming along... Everything went well and good till I
came to X.
I know I've got everything installed and configured correctly (this is
why I didn't include any X info), the machine works GREAT except for a
few things...
If I try and do a startx (even as root), the screen clicks with the mode
change (as normal) but just stays black (actually gets light around the
edges like it is really just displaying black). If I try to back out of
X, ether by switching to VT or C-A-backspace the machine locks up tight.
(X logs show no errors or warnings).
I can also lock it up by doing a VGA=771, it fails during the kernel
load of agpgart.
The last issue is the wcfxo module began to fail, but I want to focus on
X, and I'm sure if I solve that the other problems will go way.
So I'm thinking is an interrupt problem, but what can I do this machine
has a broken BIOS and hardly any controls in it... I've been
rearranging the other PCI cards hoping I would find a sweet spot. I
tried going back to the old hardware (same thing). I have all the
goodies installed stock 2.6.8 kernel, hotplug, udev... but I've done
nothing with smp_affinity.
I've begun to think that re-installing 'just for fun' wasn't such a good
idea, laff.
Machine is a dual XEON, dual PCI bus monster. Drives are onboard SCSI,
it has got a couple eth's, firewire, a PCI audio card (and a disabled
onboard one that is 'ISA' and alsa doesn't get along with, no matter how
much I play with isapnp.conf). Notice that my video and Intel 537ep
modem doesn't show an interrupt. I don't know what device 00:0f.0 is,
and I guess that may warrant some investigation.
I'm playing with kernel options now (acpi=noirq, noapic and pci= stuff),
but any help would be helpful.
Sorry this is such a long post.
