Thanks I hope you don't mind me putting the response up for people to see. I'll try it out. If you do mind I'm very sorry and will never do that again. James Griffith
I am not sure what other online discussions you have participated in, but I can assure you that unless your message has content that is not appropriate for the whole list (and the whole world, via the online list archives) to see, there is not a problem. In fact, it always preferable that you reply to the list instead of the individual. There are several reasons for this: - I know Ron reads the mailing list traffic quite frequently. Thus, there is probably little need to CC him. Most folks prefer to not receive additional mails in the form of CC'd mailing list posts. If someone specifically wants a CC, they will usually ask in their post or have a line to that effect in their .sig. - The Debian community thrives on openness. If you read some the archives of the debian-devel list you will see lots of flame wars about various aspects of the Debian distribution. You will quickly see that people share their opinions and experiences freely on these lists. - A sense of closure. Because these list discussions are archived online for the whole world to see, many people come across the information contained in the list through a web search. Thus, they will read a thread of messages to see if it helps them solve their problem. So, if someone suggest a course of action to you, it is best to reply with a report on whether or not it worked for you. That way whoever later comes across this, will have complete information. Things like this are also why it is important to mark your subject line OT if the thread begins to wander. Regards, -Roberto -- Roberto C. Sanchez http://familiasanchez.net/~sanchezr
