Re: Replacing NFS with Samba

I've been having some major problems with a couple workstations on my
network. They are setup to mount the home directory tree from an NFS
server. The problem is, for some reason, the network connection gets
interrupted periodically for a moment. I'm still investigating the
physical connections - but every time it happens, the X-Windows session
locks up. I was hoping Samba would provide a more fault-tolerant
environment.
I recently had a similar problem, which was caused by a network card. It
had (via ifconfig) a ~2% error rate on packets (it might not have helped
that it was a 10mb/s nic and the other was 100mb/s). This caused NFS
(over UDP) to behave similar to what you describe. I didn't try NFS over
TCP, but I do wonder if it might help, aleast a little bit...
You could also try to "soft" mount the NFS share (but according to "man
mount" it might not be a good idea)
