Can the printer print its diagnostic?
Can you print a test page in CUPS admin?
Does CUPS bother to tell you *why* the job was aborted or who aborted
it?
>From the laptop, does CUPS see the desktop as a viable print server?

For sure (maybe) the problem is with the new install on the desktop.
