DVD-ROM drive problem

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1

Hi.

I've started having some problems with my DVD-ROM : it sometimes does
the following :

A) When I mount a CD, or even just read data, it'll often not read data
and instead just stay there, with both the "busy" signal and the "CPU
Working" lights on.

B) It dumps the following data to the syslog :

Jan 18 18:34:31 localhost kernel: hdc: irq timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy }
Jan 18 18:34:31 localhost kernel: hdc: irq timeout: error=0x00
Jan 18 18:34:31 localhost kernel: hdc: DMA disabled

This is repeated ad vitam aeternam. Ejection won't work : I have to
force it (the drive is never running when it does this).

I estimate, according to the syslog (which goes back to Dec 15) that the
problem started appearing on January 10 - this would correspond to
kernel 2.6.9 or 2.6.10 on my box, I think. Is it the end for my drive,
or is it a software problem ?

AMD Athlon XP 2500+
Mobo : Asus A7V8X-X
512 MB of RAM
Kernel 2.6.10
ACPI is activated
the DVD-ROM drive is a Sony DDU1621.

What is the preferred DMA mode for the drive ? I'll try setting it in
the BIOS : I believe it is a DMA33, but I don't know what mode that
corresponds to (it is a smaller numeric value, ranging from 0 to 10 I
think, or something like that)

I hope you'll be able to help

(this might be a dupe, I tried sending it to linux.debian.user, to no
avail, sorry if it is)

	Louis-Philippe Savoie
