Thanks all. What I'm getting from this is that the best way to fix this is to get another (large) drive and put linux root as the first partition. Then I can have /dev/hda1 = windows boot /dev/hdc1 = linux boot Then I can copy what's currently on /dev/hdc (just data) to the new drive's later partitions.
