video mode extensions and i855GM

Hi!

My asus laptop is running debian sarge, kernel 2.6.7, xfree86 4.3.0. The chipset is Intel 855GM and I use i810 driver. I would like to change the gamma of the display, and I do not succeed.

I tried xgamma. It showed old and new gamma, but it had no effect on the screen. No error message!

I tried to pass gamma parameters when X server starts; in file /etc/gdm/gdm.conf, section [servers] I set:
command=/usr/X11R6/bin/X -audit 0 -gamma 1.0
No effect!

Since xgamma uses video mode extension from xf86vmode, I also tried xvidtune. Whereas "xvidtune -next" or "xvidtune -prev" correctly switches video modes, "xvidtune" without parameters gives:
Vendor: , Model:
Num hsync: 1, Num vsync: 1
hsync range 0: 30.00 - 60.00
vsync range 0: 50.00 - 75.00
Video are not settable on this chip

Does anybody know if video mode extensions are more or less disabled with this driver or this chip, or both. Is it a bug? Is there any work around? I really need to correct the contrast, and I am ready to write some code, but I do not know in what direction to start.
