I've played with this on a few test systems and I really like everything
about it, including their philosophy which is very close to Debian's
(makes sense since many Debian developers work for them).

Same here. Last week I finally dumped Win2k off my main machine. I went through several distributions' installations. Some more than once. Fedora Core 3, Ubuntu 4.10, Debian 3r3 and Progeny Developer RC2.

Of the set the installation that impressed me the most was Ubuntu's. From CD to GDM at a reasonable resolution in no time flat. Sensible configuration all around although it's LVM support is what ultimately removed Win2k from my machine*.

In the end though I installed this machine with Progeny Developer RC2. I loathe to admit it but the Anaconda install won me over. That and the fact that I didn't want to deal with switching from Ubuntu's repository to Debian's Repositories. I like Ubuntu but I am too accustomed to riding testing/unstable to slow myself down to Ubuntu's 6 month release cycle. Ironic since one of Ubuntu's bullet points is it's faster release cycle compared to Debian. ;) Anyway, Progeny had far less of a divergence from Debian so it was an easier transition over.

* I hadn't planned on removing Win2k last week but this is what happened. I was getting tired of not knowing exactly why City of Heroes was not running under Transgaming. I had heard rumors of it working on Red Hat. I figured since everyone and their mother releases for RPM I'd give Fedora Core 3 a whirl and if CoH/TG worked there then I knew I could do it with Debian. If not I'd try other options.

Well, it didn't work under FC3 and I didn't want to deal with Red Hat's brain deadness any longer than required. I wanted back on Debian. Having seen Ubuntu just a day or two before I decided to give it a try. At the same time I figured I'd play with LVM. Somewhere in configuring LVM through Ubuntu's installer (Sarge's?) it tweaked my NTFS partition just enough that it wouldn't boot. I could mount it. I could read from it. I just couldn't boot from it. None of Microsoft's "recovery tools" (more like last ditch prayers and begging) helped. Facing a wipe of the 2k partition I thought "Well, hell, if there was ever a time to jump ship..." and lamented not being able to get TG to work.

Then I remembered my GF3 card, popped it in after reinstalling Linux 6-7 times and got CoH+TG to work under Debian using an nVidia card instead of my nicer ATI card. I have yet to reinstall Win2k though I saved 10Gb of space in case I get the hankering. Oh, and LVM is far easier to configure after getting the basic OS up and running. Dare I say even intuative. :)
