An idea , may be !!
in fact when you use su , without dash ( - ) , you log with the
normal Environment and not with the root environment !!!
try instead : su - , perhaps ??
any way since you are new to linux (or debian) I think it is better for
you ( I repeat what I had said )
" I suggest you to install knoppix on hard disk ( it works perfectly
and detects most Hardware ) you can complete it, with apt-get ".
