Assuming it is gdm that is giving you grief ... if you want to keep it
installed, but not activate it at startup

mv /etc/rc2.d/S99gdm /etc/rc2.d/K01gdm

then if you decide you want to fire up a graphical login, as root run

telinit 3

then to go back to colsole only

telinit 2

uninstalling also works, but then you dont have the graphical option
later
