i have tried vga, svga and nv. after poking around i found that the drivers are packed in xserver-xfree86 for Xfree86 4.3 rather than being in a separate package like I'm used to

the video chip is Nvidia GF2MX.  running anything that touches the Xserver causes the system crash,  "XFree86 -configure" included.
