xserver-svga is in XFree86 3.3.6 in woody. You could try vga driver
instead of svga.

i have tried vga, svga and nv. after poking around i found that the drivers are packed in xserver-xfree86 for Xfree86 4.3 rather than being in a separate package like I'm used to

Lacking more info on your video chip, try running "XFree86 -configure"
as root.

the video chip is Nvidia GF2MX.  running anything that touches the Xserver causes the system crash, "XFree86 -configure" included.
