I assume you get a login shell when you log in via GDM though, right?

I don't use GDM, but I think you don't (you didn't used to with KDE, but since I learnedto deal with it I don't know what happens now) for any DM.

All the terminal emulators I use can be configured to give a login shell; in some respects that's better.
