Using a memory stick on Debian 3.0

Has anyone has any success using USB memory
sticks on Debian 3.0? I am using kernel
2.4.26 with the following needed options
compiled into my kernel, but I cannot see my
memory stick.

SCSI support
* CONFIG_SCSI scsi_mod.o
* CONFIG_BLK_DEV_SD sd_mod.o

File systems
 * CONFIG_FAT_FS fat.o
 * CONFIG_MSDOS_FS msdos.o
 * CONFIG_VFAT_FS vfat.o
 * CONFIG_PROC_FS
 * CONFIG_EXT2_FS ext2.o

USB support
 * CONFIG_USB usbcore.o
 * CONFIG_USB_DEVICEFS
 * CONFIG_USB_STORAGE usb-storage.o

I've also loaded the usb-storage module
and mounted the USB filesystem:
mount -t usbfs none /proc/bus/usb

I have two zero byte files (devices and drivers) in
/proc/bus/usb, but I don't have any
usb-storage files in /proc/scsi.

Is this a sign my device isn't supported? Am I
doing something wrong? If I take this memory
stick to a Windows 2000 box, it detects it as
a 'USB NAND FLASH DISK USB Device'.

Thanks for your help.

Michael
