You might want to search the archives for the following subject; *upgrading kernel 2.2.20-idepci*. Going from memory, I believe all I did was 'lspci -vv' and/or 'modprobe ne2k-pci', and it started working. My ethernet card was a Realtek, nothing special card, so hopefully your issue is much the same.
