it's not that the modules have changed so much from 2.4 to 2.6.
using devfs on 2.6 should be pretty familiar even after the
upgrade.
i think it's that devfs could cause modules to automatically
load when you ask for a certain device (alias /dev/hdc ide-cd),
but udev doesn't do that. you must explicitly load the module
for your hardware, then udev creates the device when it sees the
device show up in /sys.
it took me a while to figure that out too. they seem to have
done away with the driver-on-demand way of doing things. now
it's up to hotplug or /etc/modules to get drivers loaded.
