readline support in xmaxima

I dont know what I am doing wrong, But I cannot use up and down arrowkeys in xmaxima to go to previous and next commands. Instead the cursorgoes to the previous/next line. CTRL-p and CTRL-n are also not working.

I am using debian testing, Maxima 5.9.0. Downloaded the packages fromftp.us.debian.org. Can someone tell me how I can get the readline support?
