Do I understand from your email that Mozilla does NOT use fontconfig or ghostscript? If I know that, it at least narrows the search.

A child window comes up, and stays up. If I move the child window around, it leaves behind an unrefreshed trail. I can't close the main window. The only way out is to do a kill.I had that once before, but it was on Sarge. The solution was to install xprt-xprintorg. The woody backports have that package. You might backup your partition then install that package and see if it resolves it.
