That was a good idea. I used "find -amin -cmin /dev" Didn't directly
help the way I was expecting, but made me discover that the whole
problem was in the fact that the scanner had not been added to the
black list of hotplug. After the unplugging-replugging the user was
able to use it. 
What is the correct format for /etc/hotplug/blacklist? Mine is empty.
