David and Paul, thank you for your replies.

The Netgear router has NAT, Port Forwarding and DHCP.  It is enough
for now, but I would also like to start building a more formidable
(statefull) firewall that will be able to display connections in
progress, warn of the intrusion attempts and so on.  And the router
does not support IP v6.

I guess there is no way but getting down and dirty, even though that
will have to wait some time till...
