I think you pretty much nailed it.

My personal favorite is Debian.  Install ipmasq, iptables, squid and
adzapper.  Make the gateway also firewall and transparently remove ads
and cache for everybody using your network.  This saves you and
everybody on your network from having to have a browser cache, since
everybody's using the same cache then.  Saves you bandwidth as well:
Not downloading ads!
