It is incompatible with the IPSec backport in Debian's[Herbert Xu's] 2.4 kernel. Search the debian-devel archives for the flamefest[and don't start another one here]. [Look at the middle of September into the beginning of October, major thread titled "Debian should not modify the kernels" with several other smaller threads]
