What I usually do is move /usr/bin/esd to /usr/bin/esd.real and create a
new /usr/bin/esd containing:

#!/bin/sh
exec /usr/bin/esd.real -as 5 $*

the other thing you should do is get the libesd-alsa0 instead of the oss
version.
