Look into the "equivs" package; evidently you installed qmail from
source?  The problem is that there are many packages that have the
dependency "mail-transport-agent" which exim satisfies (as would
qmail). You can use equivs to tell the system that your locally
installed qmail satisfies that dependency. BTW, there is a debian
qmail-src package, you know, but I don't belive it provides the mta
dependency, so you would still have to use equivs ...
