'start-stop-daemon' is part of the dkpg package, so I guess your path simply does not contain necessary directories. How do you get 'root'? By 'su' in a way which preserves the former user's path? Try a login shell instead, ie. logging in on a console or doing 'su -' from a terminal and see if it helps. Cheers, Flo
