This is what I do to change the root window with all of gnome enabled
(nautilus, etc):
gconftool -t str -s /desktop/gnome/background/picture_filename ~/bg.jpg
Therefore, you can do something like this for xplanet:
xplanet -blend -output ~/bg.jpg -geometry 1024x768
gconftool -t str -s /desktop/gnome/background/picture_filename ~/bg.jpg
Another useful option is:
gconftool -t str -s /desktop/gnome/background/picture_options
"centered|scaled|stretched|wallpaper"
where you pick oe of centered, scaled, stretched or wallpaper.
