I don't belive that any of the prior to 2.5 NTFS stuff is reliable.  I haven't
tried the new driver, but there is apparently a patch for 2.4 that you could
download and build a custom kernel with, for this purpose.

However, given that it might not work, I suspect that you're better off using
Windows to extract your data.

Why would you expect Debian to work easily with a closed source very complex
filesystem that has little documentation?  Debian's badass, but it's not magic.
