I find that if I temporarily change the pinning so that 
eg., unstable is top choice when I'm upgrading certain
packages with boatloads of dependencies, then immediately
change it back before upgrading anything else (or
doing an update), then most of the dependency problems
are alleviated.  It's still worthwhile doing a check
of *all* packages which will be affected before going
ahead, but it works for me, anyway.
